News
----

1.  Poseidon got the Europe Online award, as a good Greek site.

2. We thank Professor Moysis Boudouridis who helped the HEC to have its
first mirror in Greece,at platon.ee.duth.gr/~hec, in Thraki, Greece.
Professor Boudouridis is working to mirror the HEC site at   the University
of Cyprus and the University of the Aegean.


2. HOL has provided its resources and mirrors the entire HEC including
   all the projects.  The URL is:
   www.hol.gr/mirrors/hec 

3. Hellas web page now is mirrored in Crete, at the Institute of Computer
   Science (ICS) which is one of the Research institutes of Technology
   in Greece.  The URL is:
    www.ics.forth.gr/hellasW3/root.html 

4. With the help of Professor Moysis Boudouridis, began the cooperation
    between Dimokrition Universith Thrakis (DUTh) and HEC.  As a start,
    the first mirror site of HEC at a University was established in DUTh.

Committees Update
=================

Promotion Committee:
---------------------
A questionnaire that will be analyzed and guide us in  the  promotion is
being prepared by Ilias Hristodoulakis. 

The first part of the questionnaire will be about academia and Neolea of
the HEC and it will be available by next week. We would like all of you to
contribute to this questionnaire with your answers.

The second part will be ready next month.

In the meantime an e-mailing list and a mailing list is being prepared by
the liaison of this committee in the HR department. Mrs Hovecomp is
collecting addresses and e-mails. Also a database is being prepared by
Rigos and Tsapara for the same reason. We need your cooperation so please
send us as many
addresses as possible.

Press
-----

Mr Katsepontes is preparing a press release.


Legal
----

Director Thanasis Episcopos, Mr. Katsepontes, and Mr. Moshoyiannis (HEC's
legal advisor) are examining the copyright issue of our by-laws and in 
general reviewing our by-laws.

The papers for non-taxable organization are beeing put together and
will be sent the first week of March to IRS.


HR
--
The structure of this department is ready and it is fully operational. For
more information review the attached file subpack.

Administration
---------------
We are working on the procedures that will hold from March for all the
subcommittees of HEC. If you have any suggestions please e-mail them to
tsapara@math.uic.edu. These procedures are subject to EC approval.

New Members' applications for PAC and Associate members have been approved
by the EC.

Project Subcommittee
-------------------
Mr Swindale who is responsible for the Projects committee has submitted a
draft for Project applications to the EC and the final version will be
available during March. He is also working on the structure and the
procedures of this subcommittee that will be ready for EC approval by the
middle of
March.

Mr Pentikis will be our temporary technical contact until another person is
available, since Mr Pentikis wants to dedicate his time to the HTML
department which he has recently joined and leads. He along with Mrs
Mauromati, is also responsible for the PAC HTML page which will be ready by
the end of next month.

Mrs Tsapara will be the temporary general PAC contact. You can direct your
questions to her.

We communicated with the Foundation for Hellenic
Culture at Berlin, Germany. The Director of the Foundation, Dr.Ikonomou
requested more details which he will pass to Ms. Vasso Papandreou who is
visiting Germany this weekend. Ms. Papadreou is the Minister in charge of EOT
.

One  project has applied to join HEC. 
The HellasMath Page "mathematica" created by Mr. Paris Pentikis  and
Professor Mwses Boudourides. Both gentlemen are members of HEC.
The project is subject EC approval before it is posted at HEC.

Education- Hellenic Studies
---------------------------
Capt.Evangelos Rigos spoke over the phone with Professor Coufoudakis. After
an extensive report about our activities, he agrees to join
this committee and he promissed as soon he returns from an overseas trip, end

of March, to call Dr. Andre Gerolymatos and discuss the details and
organization of this project. 


Education - WHSA
----------------


Our director Thanos Voudouris is leading an effort to connect through the 
internet and organize the Hellenic student associations from all over 
the world. The Worldwide Hellenic Student Associations (WHSA), code named 
ARISTOTLE, is a huge project and will require the cooperation of hundreds 
of people.  There are at least 70 known HSAs around the world and many of 
them have over 100 member students. 

Progress since the inception of the project this month:
 - About 20 HSAs registered in HEC-WHSA.
 - A listserv mailing list has been in place with 28 members.
 - A WHSA web page has been established and will be constantly updated.
 - Teams and committees are formed and are getting organized.  
 - A communications dept is working to get the word out and enlist mre HSAs. 
 
 - A database is being built in Msoft's ACCESS to record the members.
 - Brainstorming session is underway to identify potential projects.
 - Looking into getting an irc channel
 - An FAQ is beeing developed


Kerveros Committee
===================

Mrs Hovecamp and Mrs Tsapara are preparing the procedures and the initial
draft for one more project of HEC, which is still subject to EC and
Validation approval. Kerveros will have as its goal to take action in all
the cases where Hellenism or the history, civilization, and anything
related to Hellas is underepresented or mispresented on the INTERNET. 


HTML Development
================

Mr Pentikis and Ms Mauromati have started working on the organization of
the HTML department. They are working on the design of the PAC webpage,
which is 
still subject to EC approval.

 In addition they are creating an HTML department. Malcom, which is
one of the most active members of Poseidon, has recently joined this group.


NEOLEA
======
Mr. Manolis Pepis, ex Kasian president, volunteered to organize a major HEC
project. The objective is to bring close to HEC and Hellenism NEOLEA. He
has called the first NEOLEA meeting and during the first weekend of March,
the first NEOLEA meeting will take place. Mr. Rigos called Dr Zachariou,
president of the Greek Teachers' Associations of New York and the President
of American Greek Teachers Associations. 

ASSOCIATIONS
------------
PanEpirotic, headed by Mr. Nicholas Gage, has applied to join the HEC and
the PanDodekanisians are having a meeting on February 28 in relation to the
HEC.

They requested a meeting with Mr. Manolis Pepis to obtain a clear Picture
of the HEC.

TECHNICAL
=========
Our technical department was working on evaluating operating systems and
web server software.  It has decided to go with a NT vs 4.0 operating
system and Microsoft's web server software.  Currently specifications 
of the server have been sent to various vendors.  The three finalist
vendors are:  DELL,  ZEOS/MICRON, and GATEWAY 2000
The price of the server will be ~$5,000.

With the help of our sponsor SYSNET, the HEC's own server could be
in operation by the end of March.
