HELLENIC STUDIES ON THE INTERNET

A National Project, July 1999
District 21

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY By default, AHEPA has assumed the responsibility of teaching Hellenism to our children, grandchildren and all Phil-Hellenes. We have a rich and honorable heritage. We have given the civilized world so much. The Hellenic Heritage is important and should be passed on to the future generations.

GOALS Provide Hellenic Studies to every interested Hellenic-American Youth. Today, with the advances in education technology, we have an opportunity to offer Distance Learning to everyone via computer and a modem. Courses will be available through the Internet, for credit towards degrees or general education. A growing number of students are using the Internet to take college courses without meeting the Professor or attending classes. This project fulfills AHEPA’s goals for Education and Hellenism.

PARTNERSHIP Meetings are continuing with San Jose State to reach an agreement of Partnering with the University to provide courses on Hellenism on the Internet. Progress is being made and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is underway. AHEPA will be in the educational system as a partner with San Jose State. AHEPA will offer the courses, together with San Jose State, using the name of "AHEPA Educational Foundation" and the AHEPA Logo, together with San Jose State’s name and logo.

RESOURCES Currently we have two people working on the MOU and two Professors that have offered to donate their time to assist in the timely startup and assistance for this effort. Currently we are using a consultant that is guiding our effort.

COST OF PROJECT We are soliciting donations to reach the first phase of our funding, $300,000, for a Lectureship. Our goal is $2,500,000 for a fully Endowed Chair, (Tenured Professor & Staff) to provide courses on Hellenism in perpetuity. To initiate this effort this fall, $15,000 of the initial funding will be used to start the effort this year ($15,000 is equivalent to the interest anticipated from an investment of $300,000). Once the money is invested (from $300,000 to the goal of $2,500,000), expenses will be covered by the endowment. We are hoping to establish a curriculum, design courses for the Internet, publish in the college catalogue and provide the first course in 2001.

FUNDING We will be soliciting donations from all the Chapters, District, individual AHEPANS, Daughters of Penelope and the Hellenic Community at large. This is an opportunity to teach our youth by offering Courses on Hellenism on the Internet. Corporate sponsors are especially welcome. A funding campaign to accomplish our Financial Goal shall be developed. Funding shall be solicited in the name of the Educational Foundation and deposited in a separate account until required.

SCHEDULE Currently Steve Bolaris, PDG21 and myself are working on putting this Project together. To get started this year, we have the support of Professors Constantine Danopoulos, and George Koustouris that are volunteering their time. As a consultant we are using Dr. Roxanne Mendrinos, Ph.D. The MOU should be completed by December 1, 1999. We plan to raise $300,000 in twelve months and $250,000 per year thereafter, until the endowment of $2.5 million is raised.
