Additional Activities of the Hellenic Community in the area
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church: 1) Locally made website. 2) Website made by the archdiocese.
NEW: Oregon Foundation for Greek Studies! In conjunction with Portland State University ... check out for opportunities to learn Greek, scholarships, etc.!
Holy Trinity Church Festival. OCTOBER, 2001! Held in the first weekend of every October, the annual festival of our church is a classic attraction that draws thousands from the Portland and Vancouver areas. The whole community participates to make it a success.
St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. The recently ordained, second church in our community.
Philoptochos. Our community has a very active Philoptochos society. Among the many activities, the members run the Philo House and the Ethos church bookstore. Administratively, the many members are loosely organized in groups (called "circles"), to better coordinate their activities.
American Hellenic Educational Center (AHEC): Camp Angelos. Thanks to generous funding from individuals, the community owns a large property a short distance out of downtown Portland. A camp on the property is used for year round activities, such as the Camp Agape held by volunteers of our Philoptochos every summer.
Classic Greek Theatre. The only organization in the U.S.A. to consistently stage a Classic Greek play very year was started by members of the Portland Greek community in 1986. The play is drawn from the classics of Aeschylus, Euripides, and co., and is adapted in the English language, while otherwise maintaining its character of 2,500 ago. Thanks to arrangements, school teachers in all of Oregon and southern Washington teach the same play in their class. Near the end of the term, they bus in over 1,000 school students to actually see the performance of the play, as part of their grade.
Flavor it Greek! The whole community contributed recipes for compiling this cookbook, at the initiative of our Philoptochos. Read about it!
Portland Youth Dance Groups. Our Youth Groups make the community proud with their traditional Greek dances. (Read about their awards at the FDF!)
Cappella Romana. Extraordinary, one-of-a-kind performances recreating Byzantium-era Orthodox Christian music, directed by one of our own.
Annual Greek Open Golf tournament. Call the church office for information and a registration form.
[* Local Hellenic Organizations: Do consider the advantages of pursuing
your activities through the AHEPA Family. You can join the local chapter,
or start one (if there is none in your area). Once part of a Chapter, you
may continue your activity as a committee of it. You will have a much larger
base of people to reach.
Even if you can not join the Chapter, if you have an independent website and
you link to this page, you can ask your local AHEPA to link from this page
to your independent website. More will be able to find you.]
