FDF DANCE SCHOLARSHIP TO GREECE APPLICATION INFORMATION

OBJECTIVES:
To give deserving FDF dance directors the opportunity to learn well researched traditional Greek folk music, song and dance from qualified professional instructors in Greece. The following factors will be considered:

The directors that are sent on this scholarship will also act as ambassadors from the Diocese of San Francisco and will help promote cooperation between the FDF and sister Greek folklore organizations.

ELIGIBILITY:
All FDF dance directors that are members in good standing in the Greek Orthodox Church(or their parents) and that have participated in an FDF are encouraged to apply. All recipients will be required to submit proof of health insurance that covers them in Greece for the duration of the seminar.

THE SCHOLARSHIP:
Two FDF dance scholarships will be awarded that will provide for airfare, dance instruction and room and board and $250 of miscellaneous expenses. Three candidate dance seminars are being considered by the FDF:
1) MAZOXI '98 Seminar in Crete from July 12 to 26.
2) Siderokastro Seminar hosted by Yvonne Hunt from July 21-31 at the spa facilities called Loutra in the village of Siderokastro, Serres
3) Florina Seminar hosted by Simos and Yiannis Constantinou from August 4-16 in the village of Agios Germanos, just north of Florina.
Other seminars may be considered as information about them becomes available. Scholarship applicants should be available to travel to Greece any time in the month of July or August until the actual seminar is chosen.

In return, the scholarship recipients shall take a good quality VHS format video camera and video as much of the instruction as possible, take a still camera and take candid shots of the dance instruction, dance instructors and evening events as well as acquiring or purchasing recordings of the music used at the seminar on records, CDs or high quality cassettes. In consideration of being awarded the scholarship, the recipient shall make copies of all videos taken of all Greek folklore and dance they witness during their stay in Greece outside of the seminar for the FDF. They will make copies of the music & videos for the FDF within 30 days of their return, write an article about their experiences, and make music and video copies and be available to teach the material they learned on request for gratis, being reimbursed only for expenses. In addition, the recipient agrees to make copies for anyone who requests any of the material with the understanding that the requester will pay for the cost of the blank videos, cassettes and postage. Roundtrip tickets and seminar expenses will be paid prior to departure and upon the $250 of miscellaneous expenses will be paid upon submittal of the required material to the FDF.

Scholarship recipients are expected to attend all days of the seminar. Attending fewer days makes the seminar less valuable to the recipient and fewer dances and material would be captured on video, thus making the benefits of the scholarship less valuable to the FDF. Therefore, for the days of the seminar the scholarship recipient does not attend, the scholarship recipient will be required to reimburse the FDF the ratio of the number of days not attended to the number of total days of the seminar multiplied by the value of the scholarship up to the maximum amount of $2000 if the scholarship recipient does not attend the seminar at all. For example, if the seminar is 10 days in duration and the recipient attends only five days, the recipient must reimburse the FDF in the amount of $1000. If the scholarship recipient can not attend the seminar, they do not have the option of sending someone else in their place. The scholarship recipient who cannot attend the seminar will not be responsible for the expenses if the FDF is able to send another applicant instead, but there is no guarantee that an applicant will be able or willing to accept the scholarship at a late date.

The FDF Board of Trustees does not make any claims as to the quality or value of the workshop, buts feels that it is an appropriate seminar for an FDF director to attend. Applicants are required to sign the enclosed waiver upon submittal of the application which holds the FDF Board of Trustees, its officers and advisors, the Diocese and the Archdiocese harmless for any type of loss, injury, illness or expense arising from the scholarship. The parents of directors under 21 years of age as of July 30, 1998 will be required to sign the waiver as well.
