This is a Message from a friend in Belgrade.
1 April 1999
The second bigest town in Yugoslavia, Novi Sad was again heavily bombed this morning. One of the TWO brigdes over DANUBE was distroyed. The destruction with two cruisse missile occured early in the morning when workers use this bridge to go to work. The number of CIVILIAN casulties is not yet known. Novi Sad water supply system is damaged and largerly out of function.
I am at the INSITUTE and my wife also at work while our children are on the other side of the river SAva. so I will keep this report to the minimum. For more Belgrade info pleas look at www.beograd.com (independent group), www.bg.ac.yu (Belgrade university) (here you can find e.g. a report of Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General, who is visiting Belgrade in support of Yugoslav resistance to NATO aggression as well a much more info on the crisis).
We were very alarmed last night because there was a warnirng that municipal police stations will be attacked, as well as bridges and other nonmilitary objects. (my apt. is only 300 meters nearest potential target, if don't count an unfinished huge garage, which may look different from the air and which is only 50 meters away).
We will be surely cut off soon from internet (If we are silenced, it doesn't mean that we are not alive and screaming! Please, if this happens, write letters e-mail messages, in petitions in support of the cancelation of ALL war actions ).
I wanted to post here at the INstitute some sources and www addresses about civilian casualties in Kosovo. I visited several sites, www.newsweek.com www.washington.com etc. I found an article SLAUGTER IN SERBIA (newsweek) which I wanted to copy. When I red it it turned out to be detailed satellite phone report by the "KLA" army leader Azem Syla about UNCONFIRMED slaugter of Kosovo intelectuals and civilians which was nevertheless advertized as SLAUGTER IN SERBIA by Newsweek.
Please send me www addresses where I can find ANY reliable reports by independent sources which I can post here in good faith!
By the way, the reportedly missing intelectuals (Ibrahim Rugova, Fehmi Agani, Veton Suroi all moderates) gave a statement for the press. The leader of all moderate Albanians Ibrahim Rugova gave a statement AGAINST THE WAR OPTION and AGAINST the NATO bombing, contrary to the position of "KLA" extremists leaders Syla and Tachi. So far NATO has supported ONLY the Albanian extremists!?
Please help the world STOP THE WAR in Yugoslavia. Please write letters, e-mail messages, sign petitions.
Now we know that we are all on the same side!
Rade Zivaljevic
p.s. I apologize to numerous colleagues who sent me messages of support. I spent so little time away from home that I coudn't afford to write all of them at this time. Dear friends and colleagues, I read your letters to my family and friends and we know that we are not alone.
