Subject: [HECA:61] OXI DAY: San Francisco

OXI Day at Union Square San Francisco

"A Hellenic Celebration of Courage and
Triumph"

On Saturday, October 25, 1997, in partnership with the Greek Consulate and
the City of San Francisco, the United Hellenic American Societies (UHAS) of
Northern California is hosting a Hellenic Celebration to commemorate the
occurrence of OXI Day (pronounced "o-hee" which translates to "no").

On October 28, 1940, Greece issued a courageous statement of defiance by
responding with "No" to an ultimatum issued by Mussolini and the Axis Forces
stating their intent to invade and occupy the land. This celebration will
honor those who battled with courage and honor to preserve democracy and
freedom, not only in Greece, but for all of Europe and the free world.

UHAS, the Consul General of Greece, along with the Mayor of San Francisco
and other prominent dignitaries, anticipate a successful event at Union
Square. The celebration will be open to the public and free of charge.
There will be food and drink vendors, live music, ethnic costume displays,
dance performances and historical presentations.

The festivities will begin at 11 a.m. with ethnic costume displays and dance
performances from local groups. At 1 p.m. Mayor Brown and the Consul
General are expected to host the raising of the Greek Flag, the presentation
of colors and the singing of national anthems. The program will conclude
with music and dancing for everyone.

Mark your calendar and come celebrate this important Hellenic event by
reliving the history of Greece's courage and triumph with your family and
friends.
