The Hellenic Institute of Strategic Studies was founded in Otober 1994 with its headquarters in Pireas. It is a non-profit organization and came into being because of a deep desire by Superior retired Officers to create an institute with certain specific goals in mind. In addition to the forementioned, members of the institute are personalities of the Hellenic Academic, Diplomatic and Business Communities as well.
The Institute was established to carry out study, analysis and research of issues within the Strategic content and submit proposals suitable to contribute to the endeavor of finding solutions to the relative problems.
More specifically, the forementioned issues are all those concernig military, geostrategic and economic subjects and the relative problems existing or rising in the Greek territory and the areas of Balkans, the Eastern Mediterannean nad Black Sea. Other issues that the Institute is dealing with, are changes and developments in International Organizations, Alliances and Unions as well as Enviromental issues. Another research topic of more historical and cultural concern centers on our efforts to maintain awareness and appreciation of Hellenism, the tradition of pure democracy, both in Greece and abroad.
Within this framework we anticipate cooperation with respective foundations/institutions of abroad. So we remain at your disposal for elaboration of studies on issues to your concern and interset, within the aim and objectives of this institute.
Recent events have had terrific impact not only on the superpower world order but as well in the small countries of the Balkans and Eastern Europe. The dissolution of the Warsaw pact pushed away for the present the danger of a new world war and led to the widespread development and expansion of influence of America and the EEC. At the same time, however, small scale wars exploded in numerous places arround the world, because of nationalistic movements and demands, because of religious differences, and because of the rapid political, civil, economic and socia changes that took place in the countries formerly held together by the Warsaw Pact or the integrity of the ex-Soviet Union.
In our region, the dissolution of Yogoslavia was followed by the formation of new and unstable countries that are trying to proceed to western Europe-type democratic regimes. This process has led to new perspectives about reasonable goals for the Balkans, as well as new relizations about potential dangers that must be avoided. The limited success that the West had in anticipating the crises that emerged here only undercores the degree to which better analysis is needed to prevent new and worse outcomes.
On the other hand, our long-lasting differences with Turkey, an increasingly unstable country that has incompatible regional strategic desires with us, the numerous conflicts between the countries of the eastern Mediterranean, and the upcoming religious revolutions in the counties of Northern Africa, all contribute to a further and much more complex situation, and the need becomes urgent for reevaluations that our country is making the correct choices of how to address these issues.
Our Institute seeks to add another voice, albeit small and non competitive, but free of financial or undisclosed motives, that will attempt to pin-point the most serious problems that burden Greece and Hellenism, and that will promote positions intented for use by appropriate government agencies.
Along with the studies that its members perform, the Institute has organised thus far three major events: the first concerned the New Marine Law, the second our relations with ALBANIA, and the third our relations with SKOPIA. Moreover, events concerned with other topics are planned for and will be presented either in open or close discussions.
We thank you for the visit to our page and we look forward to your positive response; we will very much appreciate your information about the assumptions necessary for a future cooperation.
