SKHINOUSSA

Just 15 minutes by boat from Iraklia lies the island of Schinoussa. This little island also has a deep natural harbour, a Chora and one other village. From the Chora the views of Schinoussa and the surrounding islands are stunning. In particular there are views of the uninhabited islands of Keros and Kato Koufonissi.

Boats are met by islanders offering accommodation in the Chora, a two-minute drive from the port. The Chora is basically a one street village with a number of small shops, cafes and a couple of tavernas. Beaches are dotted all around the island and all of them involve a steep climb down and a steep climb up.

Apart from tourism the island lives off agriculture. Fava is grown on the island and animal husbandry, mainly goats, also contributes to the local income. A couple of times a week a large ferry docks at the island and lorries drive up to the Chora to supply the shops with essential goods.

There seem to be considerably more small children here than on Iraklia so perhaps the future of the island is more secure.
