about the Turkish Republic
by the Governor of Washington, Mr. Gary Locke

November 8, 2001

On October 15, 2001, my office issued a proclamation entitled "Turkish Republic Day".  Its intention was to recognize Turkish Americans for their contributions to our state and nation.

My office supports honoring Americans of all backgrounds and faiths for the contributions they have made to the state of Washington.  Proclamations are not meant to take issue with matters of significance outside of our state.
Therefore, we retract the issuance of this proclamation.

The purpose of our proclamations is to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of Washingtonians and to increase public awareness of issues that enhance the well being of the people of our state.  Many of them are historical in nature, dealing with notable achievements in Washington.

We appreciate the many contributions that Turkish Americans have made to our country, and hope you will accept our sincerest apologies for any confusion or misunderstanding this may have caused.

Sincerely,

Gary Locke
Governor
