Re: ALABAMA PROCLAMATION AUGUST 30 HONORING TURKISH TRAGEDY
FOR LIBERATION TO SOVERIGNTY AND INDEPENDENCE

I am the composer of DEFIXIONES, WILL AND TESTAMENT, the mass for the victims of the Greek, Assyrian, and Armenian Genocides, who were exterminated by the Turks between the years of 1914-1923. I have performed this work internationally for the last three years, most recently at the Sydney Opera House, the Perth Festival, the Adelaide Festival,and the National Opera of Athens. I will be performing the American Premiere of this work On November 29 at ROYCE HALL at the University of California in Los Angeles.

For the Los Angeles concert I have begun doing
a great deal of national and international interviews, this week ,for example ,for THE GUARDIAN and THE INDEPENDENT in London; after this there will be national television interviews and interviews in the the Los Angeles Times, The Los Angeles Weekly, and newspapers too numerous here to count.

My practice is as an artist is to discuss the current manifestations of THE GENOCIDES, the continuation of these actions and policies by the Turkish government; I also discuss those persons who have spoken up strongly against current disinformation policies practiced by the Turkish Government since the Genocides, not only at universities such as Princeton University, the home of Heath Lowry, the plantation owner who runs the Near Eastern Studies Department and is paid by the Turks to disseminate disinformation; but I discuss also the more historical perspective of Hollywood's acceptance of Turkish blackmail not to film the great Franz Werfel account of an earlier Armenian Genocide--MUSA DAGH.

As an artist, therefore, I consider it my responsiblity to inform my colleagues --in the International and National Press-- who is spreading disinformation and who is fighting against it.

Since I have no affiliation with any institution, I will be discussing your disinformation collusion with the Turkish Government at great length. This is not personal; it is simply what my work entails. I have saved every letter, for example, that I have access to, that has been written to you, so I know the gigantic ill you are currently inflicting upon a great number of people. And I know that you are ignoring our letters, because I have received very cursory responses from your secretaries, affilliates, and damage control units.

Do you think that our people do not observe your flagrant disinterest in anything other that the decimation of your own people? How appropriate that you should be taken in by the same kind of lies by those who flatter your exclusivism, knowing that they will profit from it. Have you been blind to their flattery all these years? Do you know how Ecevit brags about how Israel is buying water from them just to prove their loyalty to their old friend Turkey?

The Greek people, the Armenians, the Assyrians have long supported your people when they were in trouble-not only in this country but also during the Nazi Occupation of Greece. The Greeks fought and lost lives, and our Bishops offered _themselves_ in place of the Jews when the Nazis came looking for them.

Curiously there have been only one or two books ever thanking them for this.

Now you wish to thank us by honoring the Genocide of _our_ people by the Turks, the very Genocide that was the model, the paradigm, for that of your own people. Clearly you do not know that the Germans and the Turks worked very closely together in determining how to" disappear" large groups of populations from their own cities, the names of the cities, defaming and then renaming the churches of those cities, which are now Mosques, or forbidden enclaves of worship. and then renaming the churches of those cities.

With this success, notable for example from the years of 1914-1923 of Asia MInor Greeks,Assyrians, and Armenians, came the perfect model that Hitler emp loyed. You must have heard the age-old and paradoxically-in your case! time-honored sneer by Hitler as he remembered the Turkish extermination of our people and planned his extermination of YOURS: "Who remembers the Armenians, for example?"

I performed eight years ago at the International Festival of Art in Vilnius, Lithuania, THE PLAGUE MASS for the Victims of AIDS. It was during that terrible and sad summer that Jews from all over the world came to place flowers on the mass graves that had just been uncovered. It was a horrible time for them. I placed all my bouquets from the French ambassadors, the Dutch ambassadors ,and the American ambassadors to my show on the doors of all the families who had come so far to honor their dead. Can't you find it in your heart to do the same for us?

 Your fraternity here is a matter of moral importance- to you, to your family, to the Jewish community, to the area you govern.

We are angry but we are also sad because we believed in the beauty of many of your people's eulogies for the dead of the Holocaust , which, yes, derives from a Greek word, and defines the manner MOST selected by the Turks for the extermination of our people--FIRE. In my performance in Los Angeles this November I will perform, Paul Celan's TODESFUGUE, the most famous Holocaust poem ever written.

 I will perform it next to DANCE OF DEATH by the Armenian martyr Siamanto, which describes a Turkish immolation of Armenian brides in 1915,one of many events well documented. Do you notice that both titles have the same meaning?

While I am prepared to forgive you, I am not prepared to forget if you do not apologize CONCISELY for what I consider to be an unfortunate error in your education. There are no gray areas here. A "Proclamation" has very little to do with praising local citizens for domestic tasks they have performed locally.

I would like to be able to say that there are some individuals who have seen the light; but I will most definitely speak not only the names of the enlightened and the heroes, but also those of the cowardly and hypocritical.

You have time time to decide which list you prefer to be on.
