PRESS RELEASE

November 12, 2002

The Federation of Cypriot Organizations in Greece (O.K.O.E.) is observing with increased interest the developments with the tabling of the Anan plan. Waiting for the decisions of the responsible state and political leadership of Cyprus and the National Council, it calls upon every interested side to approach the matter with clear mind and responsibility, so as to give a comprehensive response. It underlines the need for unity among the political forces in Cyprus, but also between Cyprus & Greece.

O.K.O.E. representing the Cypriots residents in Greece, through its recent declaration re-affirmed the following parameters which it considers as necessary principles and pre-conditions for a fair, viable and workable solution:

  • The withdrawal of the Turkish invasion & occupation forces and settlers;
  • The creation in the re-unified Cyprus of a Federal state with one international legal personality, one and indivisible sovereignty, one citizenship;
  • the solution should be based on the principles of International Law and the Aqui Communitaire, the resolutions and decisions of the United Nations, the High Level agreements between the two Cyprus' communities, as well as the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights;
  • Admission of the whole of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union and not the free areas, with temporary not implementation of the Aqui Communitaire in the occupied areas till the solution, in case that no solution will be found till the admission;
  • The Cypriot people should be informed of the content of the proposed solution, in advance to the solution, which should be confirmed by a referendum.

The Central Council of O.K.O.E. for this purpose it has decided that the anti-occupation activities which will take place in different towns in Greece (on November 15 - the anniversary of the proclamation of Denktash's pseudo-state) by the Cypriot residents & students in Greece should be characterized by its effort to inform the public around O.K.O.E.'s declaration, thus reaffirming the will of Cypriots in Greece for a just and peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.
