Today, the Hellenic Electronic Center (HEC) announced that the international effort aimed at promoting the re-opening of the Theological School of Halki is proceeding with great success. The details of the effort can be found at http://www.greece.org/themis/halki

As was previously announced, this initiative is aimed at over 5500 recipients among them the President of the USA and the Turkish Republic, members of the United Nations, the European Union, the Senate and the House of Representatives of the USA, the Russian legislatures and those of Canada and of Australia, religious leaders, and many others.

The initiative involves an electronic petition translated in 25 languages. All individuals, irrespective of race and creed, who respect religious freedoms and tolerance as well as human rights, freedom and democracy, are urged to sign the online petition or a paper version available at the website indicated above.

To date, more than 15000 individuals from all over the world including the USA, Canada, Europe, Turkey, Israel, India, Australia, Central and South America, Africa, the former Soviet republics, and Asia have signed the petition.

In Greece, this initiative has found fertile ground as many prominent organisations and individuals are currently promoting it including academic, religious and political personalities. Of course, it is only appropriate that the Society of Constantinopolites is at the forefront of this initiative.

Internationally, prominent Greek organisations of the Diaspora such as AHEPA Canada and AHEPA Australia have joined the effort as well as the World Federation of Pontians and many others.

Those with Internet access can sign the online petition at http://www.greece.org/themis/halki.

Those without internet access , can write their name and address as well as the phrase “I support the initiative to re-open the Theological School of Halki” on a plain piece of paper and can submit it to the address of the Society of Constantinopolites shown at the top of this press release.
