Facts versus Common Misconceptions

FACT Turkey did not intervene in Cyprus to protect the Turkish Cypriots.

Turkey illegally invaded Cyprus in 1974 in two waves, the second after the UN demanded its withdrawal, in order to expand its territory and to ethnically cleanse the Greek Cypriot majority from their homes in the north so as to alter the demography, using a failed CIA backed fascist coup ordered by Henry Kissinger to murder the democratic President of Cyprus as its pretext. The invasion had been planned since the 1950's and troops were already in place weeks before the coup. A previous Turkish attempt at invading Cyprus was made in 1963.

FACT There is no such state as the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", "Northern Cyprus", "North Cyprus", "TRNC", "KKTC" or "Turkish Cypriot area". Nor is there a "Southern Cyprus" or "Greek Cypriot area". The Republic of Cyprus has always been a Unitary State.

i] The areas of the Republic of Cyprus illegally occupied by Turkish troops and colonists should be referred to in lower case as the "occupied areas" or the "occupied districts" so as to distinguish them from the "free areas".
ii] The illegal secessionist entity in the occupied areas has been declared "
legally invalid" by the United Nations and should be referred to in lower case as the "illegal secessionist entity".
    iii] The
occupied districts consist of all the territory of "Kyrenia", approximately 90% of Famagusta including all of the Karpass peninsula, 35% of Nikosia and 15% of Larnaka. These were all over 82% Greek Cypriot populated before the Turkish invasion. Each should be prefixed with "the occupied Cypriot district of".

FACT There is no "Greek Cypriot government" or "Greek Cypriot administration"

There is only one government of the Republic of Cyprus and it is recognised as the government of all the territory of Cyprus both in the free and occupied areas, and represents all Cypriots irrespective of their origin. It should be correctly referred to as the "Cyprus Government".

FACT There is no "Turkish Cypriot government" or "Turkish Cypriot administration"

The illegal Turkish regime in the occupied areas should be referred to in lower case as the "occupation regime", "subordinate regime" or the "puppet regime" without use of the prefix "Turkish Cypriot" since it does not consist of Turkish Cypriots and has been judged by the European Court of Human Rights to be controlled by the Turkish military and legally invalid.

FACT Rauf Denktash is not the "President" of anywhere nor is he "His Eminence" and he was never "Vice President" of the Republic of Cyprus.

i] Denktash should be referred to on all occasions either as "Rauf Denktash", "Mr Denktash", and only in the context of UN sponsored talks as "Turkish Cypriot leader" without using the word "the" as a prefix since other Turkish Cypriot leaders also exist.
ii] The President of the Republic of Cyprus should on all occasions be referred to as the "President" and never as the "Greek Cypriot leader". The title "President" should always precede his name.

FACT There are no "ministers", "secretaries" or any other governmental, judicial, or administrative positions in the occupation regime.

If a reference to any such non-position is unavoidable after considering all other options these should be addressed in quotation marks as psudo-"<the title of the non-position>"

FACT There is no legal police force in the occupied areas. So-called "Policing" is carried out by the occupying Turkish army and a subordinate gendarmerie.

These illegal entities should be referred to as the "Turkish army", the "illegal gendarmerie" or the "illegal police". All arrests or detentions by these entities are illegal and should be stated as such.

FACT The majority population of the occupied areas is not of "Turkish Cypriot" origin.

i] The legal population of the occupied areas are the 200,000 Greek Cypriot refugees and the 40,000 Turkish Cypriots that lived there before the Turkish invasion.
ii] Due to Turkish ethnic cleansing the current legal inhabitents of the occupied areas consist of less than 600 enclaved Greek Cypriots in the Karpasia peninsula (who used to number more than 20,000 in 1975) and about 200 Maronites.

FACT Over 150,000 illegal Turkish colonists, and 40,000 Turkish troops both of whom have no right to Cypriot citizenship have been implanted by Turkey and outnumber the few remaining Turkish Cypriots (who have not fled the Denktash regime) by more than 2 to 1.

i] The "Turkish Cypriots" do not originate from the occupied areas of Cyprus nor were they ever a majority in any part of them. Before the invasion 2/3 of the Turkish Cypriots lived in the parts of Cyprus not currently under occupation and were forcibly transferred to the occpied areas by the United Nations after they were threatened with air-strikes by Turkey when it invaded. The reference to them should be "Turkish Cypriots living in the occupied areas" not "from".
ii] The illegal Turkish colonists or so-called "settlers" should be referred to as "illegal colonists from the Turkish mainland", "implanted Turkish mainland colonists" or "non-Cypriot colonists".
iii] The illegal colonists do not have "Turkish Cypriot" status, citizenship or nationality nor do any of their decedents by any combination of parentage in Cypriot or International law. For this reason the population of the occupied areas should be referred to as "population of the occupied areas" and not as "Turkish Cypriots".
