Athanasios (Tom) Papadopoulos CV for EC/HEC
Tom was born in Mycenae, Argolis, Greece, and following University graduation and army service moved to Canada in 1976. He continued his studies in Canada receiving a M.Sc. in 1979 and a Ph.D. in 1985 from the University in Guelph. Since 1980 he has been a research scientist with the Canadian Department of Agriculture specializing in Greenhouse Crop Management and Physiology, and holds the title of Adjunct Professor in three Canadian Universities (also, past Assist. Professor at the AUThessaloniki). In brief, he is a well recognized international authority is his field of specialization and has traveled widely around the world. In the last 15 years he has developed an interest in olive growing and is now the proud owner of a large olive grove close to Sparta. He counts more than 50 trips to Greece, approximately 2-3 every year in the last decade. His community service includes several terms as President, Secretary or member of the Windsor Chapter of AHEPA and of the Greek Community of Windsor. Tom is also very active politically, leading at present the Canadian branch of Nea Dimokratia. Following a hiatus of 18 years, Tom was recently elected again to the Council of the Windsor Greek Community.
A relatively newcomer to the HEC, became an enthusiastic supporter and recently became a member of the EC. His contributions to HEC so far were limited to an active presence on the Forum of Professors and Ph.Ds, a biennial financial contribution and several weeks of editorial work on the book of G. Horton ‘In Argolis’ (with Captain Rigos). Although, a strong believer in the need for all citizens to be well informed on public affairs and to be involved in politics, Tom is a political moderate, respects the non-partisan nature of HEC and will resist any attempt by political fanatics to abuse the freedom of speech offered by the various fora of the HEC. Tom looks forward to becoming more involved, and helpful to HEC, as he gets to understand better how HEC operates and identifies service areas within HEC where his expertise and experience can be exploited.
