Today, September 7, 2001 the Executive Council of HEC announced that:
a week ago, HEC notified you of a proclamation signed by the Governor of
Alabama which essentially accused the Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians
of massacres committed against Turks between 1918-1922. HEC immediately
began a large effort to have the Governor retract the proclamation.
He refused to do so and consequently we have embarked on an information
campaign to demand a full retraction of the proclamation as well as an
apology to Greek-Americans, Armenian-Americans and Assyrian-Americans.
Currently, our effort has gathered more than 1000 signatures in an
electronic petition at http://www.greece.org/themis. We urge all of you
to sign the petition and to send letters to the Governor at
THEMIS@hec.greece.org
Additionally, we would like to ask you to feature this issue
in your columns and programs.
It is a disgrace that history is being distorted and accepted by
individuals who are elected to serve justice and truth.
