CITY OF PITTSBURGH, OFFICE OF THE MAYOR

A PROCLAMATION

By virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh,
I do hereby issue this proclamation honoring
THE DAY OF
REMEMBERANCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS, SATURDAY JULY 20, 2002

Whereas, on July 20, 1974, The Republic of Cyprus was illegally invaded
and its northern areas occupied by Turkey and one month later in
disregard of United Nations Resolution 353 in which more than 200,000
Christians were ethnically cleansed and;

Whereas, today, 30000 Turkish troops are stationed on the occupied part
of the island making it "one of the most highly militarized areas in the world" and;

Whereas, reunification of the island is the only acceptable solution to
the Cyprus problem and;

Whereas, the citizens of Pittsburgh of Cypriot descent wish to honor
their parents and relatives who were brutally killed, in rememberance
and commemoration as well as by promoting the solution espoused by the
international community and;

Whereas, we recognize many individuals of Cypriot descent who have
chosen our City as their home and share their rich heritage with us

Now, therefore, be it resolved that I, Tom Murphy, Mayor of the City of
Pittsburgh, do hereby honor the contribution of the Cypriots to our city

and do hereby declare, Saturday, July 20, 2002 to be "Day of
Rememberance of the Republic of Cyprus" in the City of Pittsburgh.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of
the City of Pittsburgh to be affixed

(Signature)
Tom Murphy, Mayor
