TOTEMIFICATION AND THE LOSS OF MEANING --
THREE STORIES OF THE ELGIN MARBLES

The architect Matthew Taylor has written a major contribution to the discussion on the Parthenon Marbles called Totemification and the Loss of Meaning -- Three Stories of the Elgin Marbles. We have been given permission to publish the third part of this work on the Internet.

Part 3a describes how people taking part in the ancient procession to the Acropolis would have seen the Parthenon as they approached it. It explains what the architects were trying to achieve with their design of the Parthenon and the placing of the Marbles on it. To view this part click here.

Part 3b explains why the British Museum's current display of the Parthenon Marbles violates the original concept of the architects. To view this part click here.

The documents are quite long and you are advised to save them to your hard disk for reading later.

Matthew Taylor is a leading member of Marbles Reunited and is their representative on the International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles. To visit the Marbles Reunited website click here.
